I've decided to go with an Ulthwe scheme for them, with a little twist to the black. I haven't actually used black paint on the model past painting the base rim. The black was German Grey airbrushed on with a grey highlight washed down with Badab Black and final highlights done using Shadow Grey followed by Space Wolves Grey.

I'm not trying to take forever with these guys, I just want to paint them. Jeff runs Dragonforge.com, one of many resin basing companies that have popped up in the past few years. I've never been huge into the buying resin bases thing, I picked up some a few months back during BoLSCon and while nice, they always seem to fall into one of two categories, too detailed or crazy for use for an entire army, or just too easy to make on your own for a fraction of the cost. I kept this mindset for a long time, right up until I found the Lost Empires set from Jeff. While I loved the set, I still didn't see myself snagging them due to cost restraint. Then, out of nowhere I check Jeff's blog and see that I'd won $50 worth of bases!

I came home today to see the package sitting in front of the door waiting for me, and since then I've been hard at modeling some spare Eldar I'd picked up from a friend. Check out the pic above to see a quick example of the bases and be sure you head over to Dragonforge.com and see if anything strikes your fancy. I'm for sure picking up more of these from Jeff in the future as I exhaust this supply! Also keep your eyes peeled for a bit more in depth thoughts/review on TPC as I finish some of these models.grey_deathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03249453355399027291noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5205412229629092709.post-76768056870312459002010-01-25T13:01:00.000-08:002010-01-25T13:04:59.763-08:00Sons of Medusa Dreadnought WIP
My latest project is another addition to the boys in Green. I'm obviously going to have to go back in and do a bit of clean up here and there with the brush, but I'm really happy with the knowledge I've picked up so far!

The plan from here out is to go brush in the black and touch up over spray by hand as well. After that they should be good to go! And while this took a bit longer than expected, future projects should be much faster with the airbrush up and running now. Just need to plan things out a bit more!

I'm hoping to start sharing what I've learned from this so far with those of you out there looking to start using an airbrush! But now that the Dakka Painting Challenge has finally ended, I'm back to work on 'other' things.

To start me off, I've begun working on a commission for some Space Marine Drop Pods. The goal is to clean, assemble, and paint to base coats.

For assembly, I'm keeping the pods in three parts. A method brought to light by Realgenius. This is purely for the clients ability to continue paint a bit easier when he receives them.

I'll update with progress as it comes!grey_deathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03249453355399027291noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5205412229629092709.post-1713310012988505882009-10-06T07:53:00.000-07:002009-10-06T08:00:29.678-07:00Might be a bit..
..Before you start seeing anything new from me. I'm currently entrenched in a project for the new Dakka Painting Challenge. I can't share it with you all yet, but trust me, when I get the chance I'll be plastering it around. Hopefully I can get the whole thing finished rather quickly, but we'll see. This is a vehicle based challenge, so it will be a bit more of a time crunch.grey_deathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03249453355399027291noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5205412229629092709.post-19271225878221676292009-10-02T14:18:00.000-07:002009-10-02T14:33:08.177-07:00Sculpting TrialsWell, I've finally broken down and dove in feet first into this whole 'sculpting' thing. I bought a set of paint shapers finally after knowing about them forever and seeing the results from good friends. I've had a set of sculpting tools for a while now as well.

So what have I done? I've started messing around with an old Catachan model that's been sitting in the bottom of my bits box for the past few years now.

So far this is where we are:

I'm likely adding a set of wings to the skull on the shoulder later today, but unless I can come up with some more additional detailing, he's pretty much done. I'll have to pick out a new bits model from by box to give a go on sculpting some additional details.

I'd love to hear what people think of my first foray into Green Stuff, and if you have any ideas for more details let me know! I need to come up with some good practice work!grey_deathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03249453355399027291noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5205412229629092709.post-86409573912441218552009-09-22T14:47:00.001-07:002009-09-22T14:50:11.588-07:00Marauder Horsemen #2 Finished!
I've finally finished #2 of the 5! I'm having fun messing with the colors so far on these guys, but it's slowed my progress on them a bit.

Skin tone is Cork Brown (Vallejo) washed with 2x Dark Flesh Wash (awesomepaintjob.com) brought back to Cork Brown and highlighted with 60/40 or so Cork Brown/Bleached bone. A few spots were washed back once and blended in a bit more with successive highlights (using a bit less bleached bone).

Likely start on the next guy soon! A bit less color play this time should mean he moves a bit faster. Only play should end up being the skin tones.

More to come!grey_deathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03249453355399027291noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5205412229629092709.post-75360134641569264992009-09-19T18:24:00.001-07:002009-09-19T18:26:09.522-07:00Marauder Horsemen - Progress!
Just thought I'd throw a quick update out so folks could see the direction I've taken with the marauders! I want to paint my Marauder Horsemen to get them out of the way and on the table top, but I'm really having 'direction' issues with them. I worked on the one marauder a long ass time ago at work, didn't like how he was coming out, and haven't touched the army since! And since they're a helpful testbed for the characters, I want to work on them before hitting my big mammajamma Khorne Lord on Juggy ^_^.

Here are some quick shots of where I'm at:

As you can see, I'm really at an impasse. I just don't know what to do with the model to make it more interesting 'fun'. The skin tone is rather dark, but I wanted him to be tanned, I'll do different skin tones throughout the army, I hate doing the same skin color all the time on every person, it's just not true to life!! The colors are almost directly from the Khorne Knights, and I think that's the issue. Where they were able to rely on the use of metallics to make them interesting and fun, these guys only have a few metallic bits and pieces.

So HELP!!grey_deathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03249453355399027291noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5205412229629092709.post-62367049172495970572009-09-15T05:39:00.001-07:002009-09-15T05:46:04.459-07:00Maryland. I'm a new resident of the state and live just 20 minutes north of DC. I'm hurting for some new stomping grounds and would love to hear where the best scenes are.

I've always enjoyed having a shop to call 'home' even if I don't game that often! I have a lot of things I can do from here, so I'll lay it out to you all, and hopefully someone will have some good ideas on where to go with it all next.

Warriors of Chaos

I started this army a while back now, and really love all of the models I've picked up so far, I kind of stalled out on them after a bad paint session with my Marauder Horsemen and haven't worked on them since! In my possession right now are 2 units of Chaos Knights, a unit of Marauder Horsemen, and a Khorne Lord on Juggernaut. The only thing painted out of that mass of awesome is the single unit of Khornate Knights seen above. I've just recently broken down and picked up my Army Book as well as the Main Rulebook for the game so I'm completely new to it, only playing my first game with a friends mini's a few short weeks back. I'm excited for this army though because of it's dedication to characters. Giving me a lot of chances to experiment with different colors and techniques within the same army thanks to all of the great one off models.

Pattuns Boyz

My orks have been on the back burner for a while now as well thanks to the Sons of Medusa eating up all of my time these past few months. And while the Sons aren't 100% where I'd like them, I really feel the need for this break from them. They're playable, just not tournament point level yet. The orks have filled the need to paint something different with the muted color scheme I've gone with here, and while being green, it's a completely different green from what the SoMs have going. They're simple to paint, and a lot of fun as well. I don't have to think on these guys, just do. I'm sitting on the AoBR orks, a trukk, a stormboyz squad and zagstruk right now. I plan to get more armored elements for them and add some fun conversion work as well. Another squad of boyz will be in order once I can find some round helmet ork heads around the web! This is a 'for fun' force that will be just the models that I like or have laying about. I do loves them though!

Space Hulk

Who ISN'T working on Space Hulk minis right now? My plan is to paint them in Angels Sanguine colors and re-base them onto some appropriate 40mm tech style bases. I might order some resin ones to get me along a bit faster than scratch building them, but I could use some practice in that department so we'll see what I settle on. The reasoning behind the 40mm bases is simple, I want a termie army. This gives me that and some great minis for it to boot. I had worked up the list from just the hulk termies and it ends up at 750 using Deathwing rules. I haven't had the time with the new Wolf dex to see if the force would conform to their rules yet, but if it can I'd weigh my options between the two, main issue being who reps Logan Grimnar. So for now the plan is to build around Deathwing. The colors will be the fun part in all of this though. I'm planning a non-black-black in that the black will actually be a very dark grey tone with only the very recesses being true black. Everything else will be done in shades of grey. The red will build up naturally as well with some different glazing opportunities for more natural colors. I'm also considering light sourcing for them in a subtle manner. Many people tend to go over the top with this, but if I can make it work at the level I want, it will make them that much more interesting, and give me a great exercise in a technique I've never used.

Misc. Thoughts

All in all, I have a lot of great projects I could be working on. And I'm not sure that I can dedicate my time to a single project again like I did for the Sons of Medusa. I found myself drawn to so many different things while I worked on them, and while some of them got through ( a few orks here, a APE there.. ), I stifled myself from pursuing the things I wanted to do for the things I 'had' to do. I do want to get back to my Sons someday in the near future though as well to help finish them off and get a full painted tournament/league army, but I see any efforts in their direction being one off work or squad work. In fact I'm sort of seeing myself edge that direction with ALL of these projects, to satisfy my need to do something different all the time.

Any thoughts you guys might have or wishes for what you'd like to see me work on, I'm all ears as I move forward with all of this! Thanks for reading!

grey_deathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03249453355399027291noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5205412229629092709.post-65120623759619797892009-08-27T21:00:00.000-07:002009-08-27T21:08:16.730-07:00Pattun's Boyz - A new memberSome of you might already have seen that I have some Orks I've been working on ever so slowly. The Sons of Medusa sort of side tracked my little army project for a while now. But every once in a while, I'll take a break and throw some paint on the boyz. Today, I randomly decided that I'd finish up another boy for the mob.

The new boy is the third from the left. He went fast enough since I have a bunch with basecoats already down ( thank you batch painting! ). I hope to do more of them in the near(ish) future after I am in Maryland.

The overall plan for the boyz is to use the WW2 US Army paint scheme for them. I'm not really planning to make them my main army, just a fun side project that will eventually be a fully painted, and playable, small army. I have the Assault on Black Reach orks, a truck, a unit of Stormboyz and Zagstuck so far. And for now, I think that's more than enough to get me off an running. Oh and if anyone happens to know where I can get some round helmet orks, let me know!!grey_deathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03249453355399027291noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5205412229629092709.post-39832159539585444702009-08-20T17:06:00.001-07:002009-08-20T17:15:41.582-07:00Badab War: Gorgon Veteran Squad
They are done! I think I migght even go back and rework the Sergeant with some of the same if it strikes me he needs it.

I know the barrel needs drilled out on the Melta there! So don't yell! I'll be taking care of that tonight! I was just too eager to share the completion of the squad!

Of course future wargear options will be added in the form of different models but for now this gets me a playable unit for the force.

Anyone at BoLSCon this weekend will get a chance to see these guys in person! Along with the rest of the force!grey_deathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03249453355399027291noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5205412229629092709.post-117705231022035712009-08-18T10:12:00.000-07:002009-08-18T10:24:26.493-07:00Sons of Medusa - ProgressI have finally finished painting the last few Tacticals for my Sons. It's been a long time coming and I'm so glad to have a core of troops. It's really been a labor getting them done. Future additions will be thrown in the mix for wargear variation but for now, I'm happy. To show my happiness I've taken an army progress shot on the ol' cellphone.

I am really proud of what I've done so far with this project. I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel finally, and I really look forward to seeing the project finished. Only 2 Desert Marines, a Dread, and 5 Termies to go before I can play a Painted 1500 force.

The last Marine finished you can see in the above to the left with the first Marine from the army just behind him. The sergeant is a piece I haven't taken photos of yet either and still need to get better pictures of. He was a fun piece both to build and to paint, with bionics in both his face and arm. I hope to do a full army profile in the future that will take up space all around the web.

Stay tuned for some more progress.grey_deathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03249453355399027291noreply@blogger.com7
